Definitely a somber story, but as someone involved in agriculture, I’d say that over the last 10 years there has been a renewed interest among farmers to reduce the use of pesticides that would directly harm monarchs (and all pollinators) and to also set aside areas specifically for pollinator habitats.
Some of us are trying to reverse that trend. We have encouraged the milkweed on our property to propagate, and now host almost an acre's worth. Only a few Monarchs spotted, but hope springs eternal.
The story about the monarch butterflies just depressed me. Once again, I am reminded that we suck as stewards of the planet.
