Fake Buttons Of the roughly 1,000 crosswalk buttons in New York City, only about 100 actually function. The buttons — which at minimum grant users the illusion of self-determination in a callous automated world — are somewhat vestigial in a modern complex traffic control system. That’s down from 750 operational buttons in 2004. In many cities, the buttons have been phased out entirely.

There are some recent studies that suggest that seniors who do not get hearing aids are more likely to become victims of dementia (Here's a link to a WebMD article, not great but what I could find in a hurry: https://www.webmd.com/healthy-aging/news/20110214/hearing-loss-may-be-linked-to-alzheimers#1) What this means in part is that we'd rather pay tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars to care for dementia patients rather that spend less than $5 grand on a quality-of-life-improving treatment. (she says, as a hearing aid wearer) The even bigger story, of course, is that we're very good at treating symptoms but very bad at prevention.
