Numlock Sunday: April 7, 2019 | The Billionaire Boondoggle with Pat Garofalo Part 2
By Walt Hickey
Welcome to the Numlock Sunday edition. Each week, I'll sit down with a writer behind one of the stories covered in a previous weekday edition for a casual conversation about the story they wrote.
This week is part two of my chat with Pat Garofalo, the author of The Billionaire Boondoggle. You can read part one here.
The book is all about how states and localities throw an inordinate amount of money at sports team owners, casino magnates, big-box retailers and movie producers in the hopes of drumming up their economies. Last week, we spoke about how stadiums get made, how the Bass Pro Shop has taken a billion dollars to make more Bass Pro Shops, and how the advantages of casinos got flipped.
Next week, we talk Hollywood, and how states are spending oodles of money on film productions that aren’t benefiting them all that much.
Pat can be found at @Pat_Garofalo, and The Billionaire Boondoggle can be found wherever books are sold, or online at places like IndieBound or Barnes…
