Numlock Sunday: Rachael Dottle on what can go terribly wrong at a landfill

Welcome to the Numlock Sunday edition.

This week, I spoke to Rachael Dottle, a data journalist at Bloomberg News about her story Warning Signs Are Flashing at America’s Overheating Landfills.

I have been a longtime fan of Rachael since she and I were colleagues at FiveThirtyEight, and she worked through reams of documents and data to get to this story. Rachael and I talk about some of the regulations and complicated science that goes into maintaining landfills, as well as a few instances where the lack thereof has created really bad situations. Those bad situations are especially vivid given what we’re talking about, including the sentence “geysers of leachate” which I didn’t really understand was a possibility in the past.
