Based on my experience with dental office consolidations, I think it’s also likely it will be less and less possible to see one particular vet, as there is likely to be more turnover/reshuffling.
Actually, our local vets are pleased with VCA, as they are able to afford to offer more services to their clients & take advantage of the greater buying power that comes with consolidation. A lot depends on the individual vet, but all three of ours are kind, caring, and offer far more than we had at the same practice years ago.
Yikes! Well, that's good to know. We've been with the same practice when it was just one guy for small animals, like about 40 years, so we haven't run into that issue. Overall, though, the only change we noticed when they went with VCA was an upgrade in services offered.
I suppose the vet consolidations makes sense, but it’s kind of the antithesis of what the childhood dream of veterinary medicine practice.
I, soother of animals, figure out how best to heal Polly Prissypants.
Certainly there’s more uniformity in care, but it’s probably not at all what people were thinking about when they chose the profession.

Our vet uses VCA. (My wife and I ended up with my mom’s rescue after my mom went into “the home.”)
I don’t know how much sharing there is among VCA practices; there was basically nothing about the dog from the old vet ~200mi. away.

Yeah. The guy she’d been using was who she started in Bad Newz in probably about 1980.
I would imagine the original vet is gone; he was elderly when I was in high school in the mid-90s.
