Mussels

The United States is home to about 300 species of freshwater mussel, a remarkable level of diversity that is threatened by die-offs, often by the development of dams. One single stretch of the Rolling Fork stream in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky has been relatively unaffected by a serious decline in mussel diversity and contains 35 unique species of mussel; for perspective, the entire continent of Europe is home to just 16 species of freshwater mussel. The creatures have significant contributions, ecological and economic alike; the mussels in one 300-mile stretch of the upper Mississippi filter 14 billion gallons of water per day, 75 times as much as the Minneapolis-Saint Paul sewage treatment plant.

Cycling

Van Rysel and In&motion have developed a new airbag system for cyclists, one that may fulfill the call for an improved airbag in the professional scene put out by UCI. The tech, which could hit the general consumer population inside of two years, is currently in the final validation phase ahead of deployment in pro races. It deploys in 60 milliseconds following the detection of an impact, and has a total weight of 700 grams.

Hippos

After years of failed attempts at reducing the invasive population of hippopotamus that has become entrenched in the waterways of Colombia, the government has determined that it must resort to euthanasia to keep the hippo population from spiraling completely out of control. Drug lord Pablo Escobar introduced four hippos to his estate in the Antioquia region of the country in 1981, but when he was captured and killed in 1993, the megafauna escape and began breeding in the wild. There are at least 169 “cocaine hippos” and, as attempts to sterilize and relocate them have failed utterly, the government has reluctantly come to the conclusion that it will have to euthanize at least 80 hippos, lest the population shoot upwards to over 500 individuals by 2030. Please take this as a reminder to spay and neuter your pets.

Hormuz

The conflict in the Strait of Hormuz and the related destruction of energy infrastructure in the Middle East due to the war led the International Energy Agency to slash its forecast of global oil demand in 2026, expecting that demand will come to 104.26 million barrels per day. That would be a decrease of 84,000 barrels per day in 2025, and the original estimate was that oil demand would actually increase by 644,000 barrels per day this year. Even so, that forecast is based on an assumption that regular deliveries of Middle East oil and gas will resume by May.

Beastly

Beast Games, the high-profile game show from YouTube sensation Mr. Beast that reportedly took $150 million to produce its second season, is by all available metrics and estimates a bona fide flop. While there are several ways to gauge the success of a streaming program, all the metrics look pretty bad for Beast Games’ second season. On the Nielsen chart, the second season of Beast Games made it into the top 10 in only its first week (with just sevem million hours streamed) and then never again; the first season made it into that chart’s top 10 for seven weeks. According to Samba TV, the second’s season’s sole week on the chart makes it part of the 293rd out of 320 shows to make the chart. According to Luminate, season two’s one week on the top 10 chart was good for just 5.9 million hours viewed, but that the fall-off was swift, with the show falling to three million viewing hours and staying a little under that number for several weeks, a sign that viewership was about half of season one.

The Commonwealth of Virginia has delivered the Confederacy yet another loss to add to its many, many losses, with the legislature passing and the governor signing a bill that ends tax exemptions for several Confederacy-related organizations that have enjoyed tax-free status in the state. The bill passed 61 to 35 in the House and 21 to 17 in the Senate, and its largest impact will likely be the United Daughters of the Confederacy no longer being able to enjoy tax-free status. Their marble-walled headquarters in Richmond is valued at $4.7 million, which would amount to a $57,000 annual property tax to support the city of Richmond.

Penguins

Magellanic penguins living along the coast of Argentine Patagonia have been deputized into scientific research detectives. A study placed bands that can detect PFAS chemicals on 55 penguins from two colonies over the course of three breeding seasons, leaving the devices on them for two to nine days and then allowing the birds to do their thing: namely, swimming further and deeper than probes can easily travel in the marine environment, all while consistently returning to the same breeding colonies on the coast within a few days where the bands can be recovered. The bad news is that the researchers were able to detect PFAS in 91 percent of the bands.
